Meet our Music & Chess Teacher

Wyeth Miller (he/him)

Wyeth was born in San Antonio and raised in Austin, Texas. As a child, Wyeth spent his youth at Sri Atmananda Memorial School, where music classes emphasized connecting with music instead of learning various scales and principles. It was here that Wyeth caught the music bug, beginning playing in bands and writing songs from the age of ten through the present. After graduating from Appamada School in 2016, Wyeth worked restaurant jobs while taking recreational music theory and sight-singing courses, eventually receiving an Associate's Degree in Creative Writing from Austin Community College.

Wyeth's teaching philosophy involves giving students the tools they need to pursue their individual musical interests while encouraging them to think critically about the music they enjoy, hopefully never ceasing to ask themselves, "why," a song sounds good the way it does and how they can apply the lessons gleaned from those analyses for use in their own musical compositions and expressions. "You can learn so much just by listening to the radio" was a handy nugget of wisdom his music teacher imparted to him that he is still fond of and likes to implement to this day.

When he's not busy recording demos or transcribing obscure 1980's style synth parts for archival purposes, Wyeth can be found espousing the contributions of Sonic Youth to the modern musical canon, rooting for the frequently awful Texas Rangers of Arlington, and trying —but usually failing—to defeat men twice his age at Zilker Park chess tournaments.
