Meet our Science Teacher

Scott Cater (he/his)

Scott was born in Baton Rouge and raised in Houston, where green forests and flowing creeks were the backdrop to a charming childhood. Experiences in the natural world inspired him to pursue a chemistry degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

After years of working as a math & science tutor, Scott began studying education at Texas State University. He earned his master’s degree in education, then taught science for ten years at Crockett High School. During that time, he worked closely with the University of Texas to mentor and guide dozens of apprentice teachers through the UTeach program. He also published articles in The Science Teacher magazine and the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education journal.

Hands-on projects with real-world applications are at the center of Scott’s pedagogy. Through inquiry-based projects, he asks students to consider how the world came to be the way it is and then contemplate how to influence its direction.

Scott fell in love with music as a child after his father taught him a few guitar chords. He believes that art is essential to the human experience and encourages all of his students to create.

When he’s not teaching science or playing music, Scott likes to go to lakes, rivers, and beaches with his wife, Elizabeth, and their two children.
