Meet our Visual Art & Design Teacher
Rebecca Hendriks (she/her)
Inspired by an unconventional high school experience at Booker T. Washington School of Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, Rebecca has followed the wandering life of an artist and creator. Rebecca graduated from Southwestern University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. Her capstone mural project of 48 paintings of her dog, Mavis, has been shared and divided amongst many friends and family. After graduation, Rebecca had the exceptional good fortune to travel the world, studying abroad, and exploring museums and architectural wonders. In the process of filling her passport to the point of requiring extra pages from the US consulate, Rebecca made life-long friends and gained a new appreciation and wonder at the kindness and hospitality of strangers.
Rebecca eventually headed back to Austin, where she did an apprenticeship to learn to tattoo. She was one of the first female tattooers in Austin before moving to Chicago and then to New Zealand, constantly learning new techniques and styles to translate into tattooing. In New Zealand, Rebecca met her future husband and lured him back to Texas. After 25 years of tattooing, Rebecca truly appreciates the opportunities, experiences, and people she has met, but teaching has always been a passion. From organizing a school-wide, monthly art program at Dripping Springs Elementary, to creating an art program for all ages at the Dripping Springs YMCA, Rebecca has taken every opportunity to foster a love of art and creation in her learners. Rebecca has successfully set up these more unconventional and diverse programs to truly focus on each individual artist’s dream.
Rebecca is enthusiastic about developing talent and honing abilities through student-driven projects. She works hard to be attentive to individual student needs and gives everyone the freedom to create. Rebecca holds a firm belief that anyone can foster and develop artistic skills regardless of their innate ability. If someone tells you, “You are not a painter,” then go paint something to become one. Together, we can create fertile ground where imagination can take root.
To foster her own mental well-being, Rebecca dotes on a menagerie of pets, including 1 dog, 4 cats and 11 chickens. The furry and feathered creatures are kind enough to share their home with Rebecca, her husband of 25 years, and their 2 children, Nico and Stella.
